Sea glass colors and what they came from
The crossing to the island runs daily from Savaneta with Vale's Rambo Adventures.
Every frosted piece on a shoreline was once a container with a job to do, and color is the clearest surviving evidence of what that job was. The whole spectrum is below, from the browns you meet in the first minute to the reds most collectors never meet at all.
A color is a factory decision that outlived the factory
Glass is mostly melted sand, and sand is almost never pure. The iron riding along in it turns a plain batch the pale blue green that old bottle makers called aqua and never had to add. Everything after that was a decision on a production floor: iron with sulfur and carbon for the brown that keeps daylight off beer, chromium for bottle green, manganese to cancel the iron tint, cobalt for blue, gold or selenium for red.
Those decisions moved on a rough timetable, so a color is a date stamp as much as a hue. A pale lavender shard is telling you it was made when manganese was the standard decolorizer, then spent decades in sunlight that turned the manganese purple. A shard so dark it reads black until you hold it to the sun is telling you something older still.
Scarcity in the drift line has little to do with the ocean and almost everything to do with the loading dock. The sea has no preference for blue. Blue is uncommon underfoot because far less blue glass was ever made, filled, emptied and dropped. A shoreline hands back a sample of what the coast behind it consumed.
Green, amber and white will fill a palm before anything else does
Three colors account for most of what turns up on a Caribbean shoreline, and they are the three that packaged everything people actually drank.
- Green. Not one color but a family. Chromium gives the hard emerald of beer and soda bottles. Older wine, ale and spirit bottles run olive, sometimes almost khaki, from a dirtier batch with more iron. Frosted, they all read as soft moss until you lift them toward the light and the differences separate out.
- Amber brown. Deliberately made, in enormous volume. Iron, sulfur and carbon in the melt produce a brown that filters ultraviolet light, so brewers never let it go. Rum, medicine and household bottles used it too. The honey ones glow with the sun behind them.
- Frosted white. Once clear glass, decolorized so the buyer could see the product. It ends up the chalkiest color of all, because the etching shows most plainly where there is no tint to hide behind. On Aruba's pale coral rubble it is also the hardest color to see, which is worth knowing before you start walking.
If a shore produces nothing from this group, it is not a sea glass shore.
The colors that make a walk worth remembering
Between the everyday and the improbable sits a band of colors that show up often enough to hope for and rarely enough to stop for.
Soft aqua is the accidental one. Nobody added anything to make it. It is the natural tint of iron bearing sand, so it marks glass from before decolorizing became routine: early bottles, canning jars, insulators, window panes. Frosted, it comes out almost exactly the color of the shallow water it was pulled from.
Seafoam is aqua's paler modern cousin, thinner and greener, mostly twentieth century soda glass. Milk glass, the opaque white that reads like a chip of soap, came from cold cream pots, cosmetic jars and canning lid liners. Easy to walk past as shell, and the giveaway is that it stays flat white where shell goes iridescent.
Pale amethyst is the color that tells time. Glassmakers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century used manganese dioxide to neutralize the green cast of iron. Under years of strong sunlight that manganese oxidizes and shifts the glass toward lavender. A genuinely purple piece was clear the day it was made, and Aruba's light does that work faster than most places.
Cobalt, cornflower and the glass that only looks black
Cobalt blue is the color everyone wants and the one patient people eventually hold. Cobalt oxide made a saturated blue no other additive matched, so it went where the color did a job: poison bottles, medicines, apothecary stock, some seltzer. Poison bottles are the interesting case, because many were made blue and ribbed or hexagonal so a person could identify them by touch in a dark cupboard. Almost none of that glass was produced next to the mountains of brown beer bottles, which is why a cobalt shard stops a conversation.
Cornflower blue, softer and greyer, came from tableware, older medicine bottles and imported glass. It is scarcer than cobalt in most places and frequently misidentified as faded cobalt, which it is not. Cobalt does not fade. It frosts.
Black glass is the connoisseur's find and the one beginners leave on the sand. Eighteenth and nineteenth century wine, ale and gin bottles came from an iron loaded batch so dark it is functionally opaque. Held against the sun it resolves into deep olive or blackish amber. If a dull dark pebble is heavier than a pebble should be, hold it toward the sky before you put it down.

At the far end sit colors so scarce that experienced collectors go years between them. The reason is the same as always. Almost none of it was made.
Red required gold chloride or selenium in the melt, so it was reserved for things that had to be red: vehicle tail lights, ship and railway lanterns, warning lenses, ruby tableware, and one short lived run of ruby beer bottles in the mid twentieth century that collectors still trace. Orange is scarcer still, essentially an art glass and signal lens color, never used for packaging in any volume. True yellow is nearly as thin on the ground, coming from depression era tableware and from uranium glass, which fluoresces bright green under an ultraviolet lamp.
Turquoise, teal, gray and deep purple come from imported glassware and art glass. Occasionally a shoreline also gives up fused, bubbled lumps from beach fires or from a glassworks pouring off the end of a shift.
A caution that belongs on a page about scarce colors. Bright, thin, still glossy red or blue in the hollows is almost always recent breakage rather than a find, and it is still sharp. Pocket it as litter and carry it out.

Color alone will fool you, so read it alongside the surface
Color is the first thing you notice and the easiest thing to fake. Craft tumbled glass is sold in exactly the colors this page calls scarce, and it turns up on shorelines everywhere once somebody empties a jar of it out. Read the color together with the surface.
Four checks before you believe a color
- Look inside the hollows. The sea etches a piece evenly, all the way into curves, chips and concave faces. A tumbler cannot reach in there, so it leaves shiny pockets where the surface dips.
- Find the crescent pits. Long immersion leaves tiny C shaped marks scattered across the surface. Under a phone camera at full zoom they are unmistakable, and no tumbler produces them.
- Feel the edges. Sea worn edges are rounded but slightly uneven, because the ocean is inconsistent. Tumbled edges are uniformly soft in a way that feels manufactured, which it is.
- Match the color to a plausible object. Curvature, a seam, an embossed letter, the ring of a bottle base. Old glass is heavy and irregular, modern glass thin and even, so a thick shard in a common color often beats a thin one in a scarce color.
What Aruba's south coast actually puts in front of you
Palette follows history, and Aruba's history is a harbor history. The shoreline between Savaneta and San Nicolas spent a century downwind of fishing camps, boat yards and a working port taking in ships and supplies from Europe, South America and North America. So one handful off this drift line can hold glass made on three continents. The color mix here does not look like a mainland beach.
Two local details change how you should look. Much of this coast is pale carbonate, broken coral and shell rather than dark quartz, so frosted white and milk glass vanish into the background while cobalt, amber and red carry from several steps away. And carbonate sand is softer than quartz, so the rounding runs gentler here than on an Atlantic beach. Pieces keep more of their shape while still carrying a full frost, so do not judge a shard's age by how round it is. There is more on this coast in the field guide overview.
None of which promises anybody anything. A color that turned up twice last week can stay hidden for a month.
